Work Arounds for common problem with XFEL MSPE

#1 Project can only be opened read-only

Problem:
You try to open your project in the professional client, but you get a message that the project can only be opened read-only because a previous checkin did not complete or there is a pending write-lock.

Explanation:
This happens sometimes, when the local cache of MS Project is not cleared properly after a check-in. The client reads from the local cache the information, that the check-in is still pending, while in fact the check-in was complete.

Solution:

    a) do you have any other version of MS Project, e.g. Project XP or Project 2011 via Netinstall, installed? if no continue at b), if yes do:
  • de-install e.g. Project XP
  • re-install MS Project 2007 Professional 4 XFEL

    b)
  • first check in the WebAccess Project Center, if your project is in fact checked out or not; use the view "XFEL check-out state"
  • if the check-out state is "yes", do a force check-in of your project
  • to do a force check-in, in the Project Center of the WebAccess open the Go To menu and select Check-in my Project, select your project on the next screen and click Check-In

    c)
  • now you need to clear your project cache:
  • start the Professional Client from the Netinstall path, and switch to the Full View using the Modes menu
  • Tools -> Local Project Cache -> Clean-up Cache; remove all entries using both the project filter "Projects checked out to you" and "Projects not checked out to you"; close the client
  • open a windows explorer and remove the content of the Cache directory, which can be located in the following positions:

    on XP desktop PC H:\Application Data\Microsoft\MS Project\Cache
    on most XP laptops C:\Documents and Settings\your_name\Application Data\Microsoft\MS Project\Cache
    on Win7 laptops C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MS Project\Cache\
    on Win7 desktops H:\Application Data\Microsoft\MS Project\Cache

  • open your project via File -> open
  • now your project should open read-write again
  • if not, contact the XPO

Obsolete (!?) Solution:

  • first check in the WebAccess Project Center, if your project is in fact checked out or not; use the view "XFEL check-out state"
  • if the check-out state is "no", open your project read-only in the professional client; if the check-out state is "yes" you may want to look at the work around #2
  • close it again via File -> close but don't save and don't close MS Project
  • count slowly to 3 :)
  • open your project via File -> open
  • now your project should open read-write again
  • if not, contact the XPO

#2 The project is already checked out to you

Problem
You try to open your project in the professional client, but you get a message box saying that the project is already checked out to to you (or someone else).

Explanation
This sometimes occurs, if you close the professional client window with the plan still open inside (by clicking on the red x in the top right corner of the window). The client closes before the check-in process is completed and the project stays checked out. This also happens if for some reason you shutdown the client via the task manager with a plan still open, e.g. shutting down windows with a running MS Project session.

Solution:

  • make sure, the project is in fact checked-out by looking at the "XFEL check-out state" via in the WebAccess
  • if the project in not checked out, check work arounnd #1 above
  • if the project is checked out, you can force a check-in
  • make sure, you don't have the plan open in MS Project on this or any other computer
  • in the WebAccess, click e.g. in the "XFEL check-out state" view in the cell "checked out" of your project
  • on top of the view click on Go to -> Check-in my projects
  • on the next page you should see your project; if there is no entry in the column "job state", check your project and click checkin
  • if the job state entry says "canceled" you have to contact the XPO or Jutta Beckmann or Erwin Deffur.

#3 Active-X controls cannot be installed in the Internet Explorer

Problem
ActiveX controls are needed to display the project information in the Project Web Access via Internet Explorer. Sometimes, you are asked to update those control, but the installation fails.

Explanation
?

Solution:

  • you need local admin rights on your PC
  • start windows console
  • change c:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files
  • de-register dlls in the follwoing way

        for %i in (pj*.dll) do regsvr32 /u %i
        for %i in (pj*.ocx) do regsvr32 /u %i

  • re-register dlls:

        for %i in (pj*.dll) do regsvr32 %i
        for %i in (pj*.ocx) do regsvr32 %i

  • maybe, you need to delete 2 classes in the IE objects. In the IE Tools -> Internet Options General->Browser Settings - > View Object Files
  • remove pj12enuC and PjAdoInfo4
  • if all fails, contact the XPO or Jutta Beckmann or Erwin Deffur.

#4 Modes menu in MS Project Professional is not available

Problem
The Toolbar Customizer we are using to modify the MS Project menu to the scope needed for the XFEL is not loaded. The customizer creates an extra menu in MS Project all the way to the left, which lets you switch between the XFEL mode and the standard mode.

Solution:

  • start MS Project 2007 Professional
  • open the Help menu
  • in the window that pops up, select "About Microsoft Office Project".
  • in the next window click "Disabled Items"
  • in the next window select the "AddIn: the project group gmbh toolbar customizer add-in"
  • click "enable"
  • click close
  • close remaining window with "OK"
  • close MS Project
  • start MS Project
